(Shel Horowitz's Frugal Marketing Tip, August, 1998)

We need to rent an apartment in Northampton, Massachusetts. Four years ago, when our current tenant moved in—and almost every other time before that—we found him by putting an ad in the local paper.

This time, instead of putting money into advertising, we put an announcement on the Northampton website (www.noho.com). the notice went up only a few days ago, and we've had several inquiries .

No matter what product or service you offer, there's likely to be a place on the Internet as closely targeted as noho.com is for our apartment. Sites may be organized by geography, by interest group, by thematic content...and there are many, many ways to connect once you've found the site. We were able to post a free message on a bulletin board. You might also consider: cross-linking...trading advertising...sponsoring the site's e-mail newsletter...supplying an article with full contact info...donating a contest prize...the list is endless and the results, if you've picked the right site, may be surprisingly strong.

NOTE: There will be no tipsheet in September, as we will be moving to our beautiful new (and very frugal) house. Meanwhile, if you want more great marketing tips, my book, Marketing Without Megabucks, will keep you busy for years. Preview both our money-saving books at http://www.frugalfun.com
